Will I Definitely Get Type 2 Diabetes?

The honest answer — and why a raised reading isn't a verdict.

There’s a particular quiet that follows the words “your blood sugar’s a little high.”

You nod. You say thank you. You leave the surgery, or you put the phone down, or you close the text. And then a few days later, usually when the house has gone quiet, it lands properly, and you realise nobody actually told you what it means. Only that it’s happening.

So let me fill in a little of that gap, because it’s the thing I wish someone handed every person on the day they’re told.

A raised reading isn’t the first step on an inevitable slide. It’s an early flag — and an early flag is one of the more hopeful things your body can give you. It means something got noticed while there’s still plenty of room to respond. Plenty of people sit at that level for years without moving. A good number see it ease back. And what tends to make the difference isn’t dramatic, and it certainly isn’t punishment.

Here’s the part people find most reassuring: a lot of what helps is about adding and rearranging, not stripping away.

  • Build meals around something with protein and a bit of fat, so nothing lands on its own

  • Eat the vegetables and protein first, before the starchier things: same plate, gentler response

  • Move a little after you eat, even briefly. Working muscles do you a quiet (but big) favour

  • Mind your sleep and your stress as much as your plate; both speak to your blood sugar more than you’d guess

If you’ve recently been told you’re pre-diabetic and you’re not sure where to begin, my free guide Pre-Diabetes: What Your GP Didn’t Have Time to Tell You walks you through it gently. And if you’d like to talk through your own pattern, my free 30-minute Blood Sugar Audits are open this month. It’s a proper sit down conversation about you and your experience, and you will leave with some answers and something to implement straight away.

You’ve more say in this than you were given time to hear.

Thank you for being here.

See you next week,
